Profound RF or Morpheus8?

Both are radiofrequency microneedling: fine needles carry heat into the deeper skin, the body repairs the treated tissue with new collagen, and the aim is firmer skin and softer wrinkles. Morpheus8 is provided by our sister clinic at the same address, so the question is which suits your skin and your aim, not which the clinic happens to own. Nothing published compares the two head to head, so the differences below come from the way each is planned and from their own studies. The doctor, Dr Marie Duggan, GMC 7488383, makes the choice with you at a free consultation at Profound RF London Clinic, 8 Devonshire Place.

Side by side

  • The dose: Profound's maker calls it a "real-time, temperature-controlled" device: sensors read the tissue temperature and the system adjusts the power to hold the set point. That is 65 to 75 degrees Celsius in the US clearance, for three to five seconds. On Morpheus8 the clinician sets the depth and the energy for each zone, usually with two or three passes at different depths.
  • The course: Profound is planned as one treatment; the trials are single-session studies. Morpheus8 is usually a course of three sessions, four to six weeks apart.
  • Anaesthetic and downtime: Profound is routinely given under local anaesthetic, with a week or so of swelling and some bruising. Morpheus8 is usually given with a numbing cream, with two to five days of redness, swelling and grid marks on the face after each session, a little longer on the body.
  • Depth: Morpheus8's body tip reaches 7 mm in the US clearance, which is why it is sometimes chosen for thick body skin. Profound's Dermal needles reach about 1 to 2 mm in a published technique paper, and its SubQ cartridge, which goes in more steeply and reaches deeper, is the one cleared for cellulite.
  • Evidence: Profound has a 100-person face and neck trial and a 50-woman cellulite trial with six-month follow-up. Morpheus8 has its own series, and the two have not been compared in a trial.

Which we plan for which person

In our practice, Profound is for someone who wants one treatment rather than a course, for a measured dose on the face and neck, and for cellulite on the thighs. Morpheus8 is for someone who prefers a lighter session repeated, for deep body work, and for combining with other treatments at our sister clinics. Someone who has had Morpheus8 and now wants a single treatment rather than another course can have Profound afterwards; the doctor sets the gap. In our experience the right choice follows from the aim and the diary, not the brand.

Price

Each is priced in writing at the free consultation, with a price match on any comparable written quote; consultations and follow-up reviews are free whatever you decide. Because Profound is one session, its written price is the whole price for the area, which is the fair way to compare it with a course. The is it worth it page weighs the result, and the full guide covers the rest.
