GUIDE

Does Profound RF really work, and is it worth it?

Yes, for the right aim. Profound gives a measurable, moderate improvement in wrinkles and skin laxity in nearly everyone treated, in one session rather than a course, and the published trials are the reason we can say so. Whether it is worth it to you depends on what you want: a natural firming of your own skin over the six months after one treatment, yes; the change of a facelift, no. Every treatment is given by Dr Marie Duggan, GMC 7488383, at Profound RF London Clinic, 8 Devonshire Place, with the price in writing at a free consultation.

What the trials measured

  • Face and neck, 100 people, seven US centres (2013): one pass with the dermal cartridge. In the 42 graded at six months the average gain was 25.6% on the wrinkle scale and 24.1% on the laxity scale, and more than 90% of patients were satisfied. The "100% response" often quoted is for wrinkles, meaning every graded patient improved by some amount, with 95% on laxity; the threshold is not published.
  • Temperature, 15 people (2015): the authors found 67 degrees best: wrinkles improved by 40% and laxity by 34%, against 29% and 36% at 62 degrees.
  • Lower face and neck, 24 women (2022): wrinkles about 30% better and the neck outline about 20%; satisfaction 8.3 out of 10.
  • Cellulite, 50 women (the trial behind the 2016 clearance): 94% of the thighs assessed improved by at least one grade at three months and 93% held it at six.
  • Arms, knees and bra line, 31 women (2021): the treating investigators rated improvement in every arm and bra-line area and in 65 to 92% of the above-knee areas.

Their follow-up runs to six months at most, the longest controlled follow-up published. The face trials found the result still improving at six months, the last point measured.

Who it pays off for

In our practice it pays off for someone with mild to moderate loose skin or wrinkles who wants one treatment and a natural result, and who is happy to wait months for the result to build. Someone who has had a Morpheus8 course and now wants a single treatment rather than another course. Someone with cellulite dimpling on the thighs in skin types I to III, which is what the US clearance covers. In our experience the change is one others notice as looking well rather than treated.

Who it does not

Someone with heavy jowls or a loose neck who wants a surgical result: the one comparison published found about a third of a facelift's laxity gain, in photographs of 15 people, and that is the right scale. Someone who wants no downtime: expect a week or so of swelling and bruising. In our practice, someone who cannot have a local anaesthetic, or who has a pacemaker or other electrical implant, needs the doctor's advice first.

The price and the review

We set out the price in writing at a free consultation, and we price match any comparable written quote; consultations and follow-up reviews are free whatever you decide. Because Profound is one session, the written price is the whole price for that area, which is worth weighing against a course of three or four. Our patients review the clinic on review.clinic, where it scores 4.9 out of 5 from 46 reviews in November 2026. The how long it lasts page sets out the timeline and the full guide the rest.
