FAQ

Profound RF questions answered

These are the questions people put to us through the form, grouped the way they are asked. The price comes first because it is the question asked most; the figure is given in writing at the free consultation, and the rest is answered here. Call 0207 043 1119 or use the form below.

Price and sessions

How much does Profound RF cost in London?

We set out the price of Profound RF in writing at a free consultation, and we price match any comparable written quote. Consultations and follow-up reviews are free whatever you decide. The price depends on the area, and because Profound is one session it is the whole price for that area.

How many sessions of Profound do I need?

One. Every published Profound trial is a single-session study and the manufacturer describes one treatment. In our practice, a second session on the same area is a choice some people make after the six-month review, not part of the plan.

Is finance available?

Yes, through Humm, subject to status, with terms that depend on the amount. The price that counts is the written price you receive at the free consultation.

Areas

Which areas of the face can Profound treat?

The face and neck, the lower face and jawline and the skin under the chin have published trials. Smaller series with a temperature-controlled device of this type, the brand not named in their summaries, cover the cheeks and midface, the lines around the mouth and the brow. The forehead, crow's feet, frown and laugh lines, the upper eyelids, under the eyes and the jowls are areas we are asked about. No published series gives a figure for them, so the doctor tells you at the consultation whether Profound can be done on yours.

Can Profound treat the stomach, thighs and arms?

Yes for the thighs and arms. The thighs for cellulite, the upper arms and the skin above the knees have published single-session series, and so does the bra line. For loose skin on the abdomen there is no published figure, so the doctor examines you and says plainly whether Profound can help. It is not a fat-removal treatment and does not repair separated muscles.

Does Profound treat cellulite?

Yes. The SubQ cartridge is cleared in the US for the appearance of cellulite in skin types I to III. In the trial of 50 women behind the clearance, 94% of the thighs assessed improved by at least one grade at three months and 93% held that at six. The body and cellulite page explains.

The treatment

Does Profound hurt, and what anaesthetic is used?

It is routinely given under local anaesthetic, in the trials a dilute lidocaine solution infiltrated into the area, sometimes with a numbing cream or inhaled gas as well. With that, pain averaged 3.7 out of 10 in the cellulite trial. The doctor plans comfort with you.

How long does the treatment take?

About an hour in all for the face and neck; the trial average was 32 minutes of treatment time. Body areas are planned by size.

How much swelling and bruising, and for how long?

Redness for hours to a day or two, swelling for up to five to ten days and some bruising. In the face and neck trial, redness, swelling and bruising lasted one to five days; in the arm and knee series redness lasted about two days and bruising about one. In our practice we plan the treatment two weeks before any event.

When will I see results?

The skin firms gradually as the swelling clears and the new collagen forms over the following weeks, and in the face trials the result was still improving at six months, the last point measured.

Comparisons

Is Profound better than Morpheus8?

Different rather than better. The difference is in how it is planned: Profound holds a measured temperature in the tissue for a timed pulse and is planned as one treatment, while Morpheus8 is usually given as a course of three. Morpheus8 is provided by our sister clinic at the same address, and the doctor chooses for the result you want rather than by the name. The Profound or Morpheus8 page sets them side by side.

Can I have Profound after Morpheus8?

Yes. Profound can follow a Morpheus8 course for someone who now wants a single treatment rather than another course. The doctor sets the gap after your last Morpheus8 session.

Is Profound a third of a facelift?

That line comes from a 2010 study in which blinded assessors compared photographs of 15 patients treated with Profound's predecessor against facelift patients and found a laxity gain of 37% of a facelift's. It is a comparison of photographs in 15 people, not a measurement of lifting, and we quote it as that.

Safety and the clinic

Has Profound been discontinued?

Candela's web page for Profound now redirects to its newer Matrix device, and no end date or notice has been published. Profound systems remain in use, including ours. The discontinued page has the detail.

Is Profound safe, and who should not have it?

The expected effects are redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness for days. Serious effects reported for radiofrequency microneedling in general, in an FDA notice that names no brand, include burns, scarring, fat loss and nerve injury, which is why the settings and the person treating matter. In our practice it is not given in pregnancy or breastfeeding, with an active infection in the area, with an electrical implant or with a history of keloid scarring without the doctor's advice first.

Who treats me?

Dr Marie Duggan, GMC 7488383, a doctor registered with the General Medical Council, gives every Profound treatment at our clinic and reviews our guides.
